National River Cleanup - May 17, 2003

Over 750 volunteers!
More than 16,000 pounds of trash removed from creeks!

Thanks to all the volunteers, and especially the site coordinators, that participated in this event!

There were 26 sites countywide –  here are results from the cleanup sites:

San Francisquito Creek 

50 volunteers; approx. 1,200 lbs. of trash, 200 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: a refrigerator canister and lawn mower

 

 Stevens Creek at Central Avenue 

15 volunteers; approx. 500 lbs. of trash. Unusual items: none reported 

 

Stevens Creek at Dana Street

5 volunteers; approx. 200 lbs. of trash, 50 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: none reported 

 

Saratoga Creek at Maywood Park

38 volunteers; approx. 1,200 lbs. of trash, 150 lbs. of recyclable. Unusual item: road construction barrier (orange/white wood barrier) 

 

Stevens Creek Reservoir at Stevens Creek Park 

118 volunteers; approx. 400 lbs. of trash, 200 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: voodoo dolls, singing Spanish birthday card and dirty underwear

 

Wildcat Creek near Fruitvale and Allendale Avenues 

20 volunteers; approx. 150 lbs. of trash, 20 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: none reported

 

Calabazas Creek at Via Roncole

30 volunteers; approx. 300 lbs. of trash, 20 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: wheel barrel wheel

 

Los Gatos Creek at Camden and Hwy. 17

38 volunteers; approx. 300 lbs. of trash. Unusual item: none reported

 

San Tomas Aquino Creek at Pollard Road 

15 volunteers; approx. 58 lbs. of trash, 22 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: contractor’s street sign

 

Calabazas Creek at U.S. 101 and Mission College Blvd.

8 volunteers; approx. 500 lbs. of trash, 50 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: a skeleton of a rodent’s skull

 

Alviso Slough / Guadalupe River 

37 volunteers; approx. 150 lbs. of trash, and 150 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: PVC solar panel

 

Upper Penetencia Creek 

27 volunteers; 1,100 lbs. of trash. Unusual items: mattresses and a cooking pot

 

Lower Silver Creek at Plata Arroyo Park

17 volunteers; approx. 500 lbs. of trash, 40 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: none reported

 

Upper Penitencia Creek at Jackson Avenue and King Road

27 volunteers; approx. 510 lbs. of trash, 60 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: 7 mattresses, 2 couches and a car battery

 

Coyote Creek at Watson Park 

16 volunteers; approx. 840 lbs. of trash, 50 pounds of recyclables. Unusual items: Lamp vase, BBQ pit and a syringe

 

Guadalupe River at Discovery Meadow 

40 volunteers; approx. 2,000 lbs., 100 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: 10-cent phone booth pay phone

 

Guadalupe River at McLellan Avenue 

25 volunteers; approx. 2,300 lbs. of trash, 150 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: motorcycle chasis

 

Los Gatos Creek at Arena Green

10 volunteers; approx. 235 lbs. of trash, 800 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: an old Polaroid camera

 

Coyote Creek at Kelley Park 

60 volunteers; approx. 200 lbs. of trash, 40 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: clothes and tires

 

Los Gatos Creek at Blackford School

30 volunteers; 500 lbs. of trash, 50 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: BBQ grill, projector TV set

  

Coyote Creek at Hellyer County Park 

96 volunteers; approx. 1,250 lbs. of trash and 375 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: hot water heater and 5 shopping carts

 

Calero Creek at Harry Road and Camden Avenue

78 volunteers; approx. 700 lbs. of trash. Unusual items: water heater, air mattress, folding chair

 

Llagas Creek/Edmundson Creek

9 volunteers; approx. 250 lbs. of trash, 230 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual item: unopened bottled of Budweiser beer

 

Uvas Creek at Christmas Hill Park  

56 volunteers; 400 lbs. of trash, 50 lbs. of recyclables. Unusual items: sleeping bag, shovel and underwear
